Description

Whether you’re looking for a short, scenic fun run, an ultra-marathon, or a challenging bike race, the Yellowstone Teton Territory has something for every athlete. Check out these fun races for the whole family. In 2020, be sure to check event dates and details. Some events may be altered, postponed, or canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and changes may be made on short notice.

Teton Dam Marathon, Rexburg

Every year, Rexburg hosts the Teton Dam Marathon to commemorate the tragic 1976 day when the Teton Dam catastrophically failed, killing 11, destroying homes in Rexburg, Blackfoot, Sugar City, and surrounding areas, and causing $500 million in damage. The marathon, which includes full marathon, half marathon, 10K, 5K, relay, and kids race options, is typically held in early June, but this year’s event was rescheduled and is planned for September 26, 2020.

Mesa Falls Marathon, Ashton

The Mesa Falls Marathon is a certified Boston Qualifier, and it’s scheduled for August 22, 2020 in Ashton. In addition to the full marathon, it includes 10K, 5K, and family fun run options. Be aware this isn’t your typical marathon on city streets. The route goes through the Targhee National Forest, and it’s quite possible to run into wildlife along the way. The course includes a mix of pavement running, gravel roads, and trails and provides great views of the Tetons, Henry’s Fork of the Snake River, and Lower Mesa Falls. The starting elevation is 6,135 feet, but the course is mostly downhill (check the marathon website for a detailed course description).

Pierre’s Hole 50/100 Mountain Bike Race, Grand Targhee Resort

Get your mountain bike ready for the epic Pierre’s Hole 50/100 Mountain Bike Race. Breathtaking views are guaranteed whether you opt for the 100-mile, 100-kilometer, or 50-kilometer categories. The race begins and ends at Grand Targhee’s main plaza, and each 31 to 33-mile lap includes over 3,300 feet of climbing. This year’s event is scheduled for August 22, 2020.

Ririe Days Races

This year’s Ririe Days Races were canceled due to COVID-19, but keep an eye out for 2021 updates. The event involves the option to run a 5K, 10K, or half marathon, as well as participate in fun family activities like an obstacle course, rock wall, bounce house, and more.

Teton Ogre Adventure Race

While this year’s Teton Ogre Adventure Race was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 Wolpertinger is taking its place. This “touchless” event involves visiting checkpoints over a nine day period.

Stay tuned for dates and details about the 2021 Teton Ogre, which takes place in the “Wydaho” region along the Idaho-Wyoming border. The event is normally a one-day 8 or 12-hour race including components like trail running, trekking, and mountain biking. Its motto is “no frills… just pure adventure in the Tetons!” The event is part of the Rocky Mountain Adventure Series.

Idaho Falls Marathon

While the 2020 Idaho Falls Marathon was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the organizers are already planning for 2021. Mark your calendar for July 31, 2021 for the event’s 10th anniversary celebration where participants can run a 5K, half, or full marathon.
