April 15, the West Entrance to Yellowstone National Park will open for the 2016 season. The West Entrance, which is located in West Yellowstone, Wyoming, is the closest approximately two hours from Idaho Falls.

When the entrance opens this week, visitors will have access to Madison Junction, Old Faithful, Norris Junction, Canyon Village, Mammoth Hot Springs, Tower Junction and Lamar Valley via certain roads that have already opened.

The remaining areas of the park will continue to be opened, as weather permits, by the end of May.

With nearly half a half-dozen areas of the park open, here are a couple activities your family could do this weekend to celebrate the park’s opening:

Visit The Old Faithful Visitor Education Center:

The Old Faithful Visitor Education Center opened in 2010 and is perfect for the whole family. One of the most interesting features is a full-size replica of the Old Faithful geyser, which allows visitors to get a new perspective of the world’s most famous geyser.

Look for some of the park’s most popular animals:

According to National Park Trips, a website dedicated to helping plan trips to national parks, several of the park’s open areas are home to some popular animals, including:

  • Grizzly Bears, which can be seen in the Lamar Valley
  • Wolves, which can be seen in the Lamar Valley
  • Bison, which can be seen all over the park
  • Eagles, which can be seen near the Madison River

Though the animals might generally be visible in these areas, there is no guarantee you will see a specific animal.
